Soldiers of 15th Ark. Regiment Who Died at Camp Butler

At the battle of Fort Donelson in February, 1862, the 15th Arkansas Infantry, then known as Gee's Regiment, consisted of six companies and approximately 270 men.  Reportedly the regiment had 7 killed and 17 wounded in the battle.  Most of the men had previously been forced to abandon their belongings, including spare clothes and blankets, in the hurried retreat from Fort Henry to Fort Donelson on February 6.  After their surrender on February 16, 1862, the majority of the men were transported north to Camp Butler at Springfield, Illinois, with some going to Camp Douglas at Chicago, IL.  The wounded were sent to various hospitals.  The majority of these men did not survive.  The officers were sent to other northern prisons.

At both of these Illinois prisons, the weather was very cold and the treatment of the POW's was extremely harsh.  Diseases were rampant and medical care was minimal.  As a result, the Confederate soldiers died at an incredible rate.  The list of Confederate soldiers buried at Camp Butler National Cemetery includes more than 880 names.

The following is a list of the 113 soldiers from the 15th Arkansas Infantry Regiment (Gee's) who died at Camp Butler and are buried there in the Confederate Section of the national cemetery.  This list was extracted from the total list supplied by the U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs, and is not necessarily complete.  The names have been compared with the Confederate service records in order to make the list as correct as possible.  There are some additional names found in the service records of 15th Arkansas soldiers who reportedly died at Camp Butler which are not in the cemetery records.  That list of names follows the burial list.
