I cannot but express my sincere regret at the loss of so excellent an officer, and sorrow for the death of this truly brave and generous young man. His loss to me was almost irreparable, as I was otherwise so closely engaged that I could not take charge of his guns. He died at his post of duty. Believing from the movements of the enemy that his object was to attack my left flank as well as front, and not being any longer [able] to use my remain- ing gun in front of my position I had it taken from the [?] and moved[?] to the rear of my [?] and so planted, as, to the best possible ad- vantage to cover my left flank yet be secure from the shot and shells of the enemies guns. which was of this time becoming very numerous and troublesome. Several of the men in the two gun detachment having been killed or wounded, I united the whole into one detachment and placed them under command of Sergeant Hunter. The two guns of this section were twelve pound howitzers. I had the remain- ing gun double charged with canister shot. This left me to fight their infantry and artilery alone with infantry in my front. I soon discovered at about ten o'clock that morning, that a charge was to be made upon me, as the Long Line of the enemy in the shape of a crescent, in my front, and partly
