properly dealt with, as soon as an opportunity

occurs. The men also acted most gallantly, some

few, and but a few appearing the least "shaky".

I cannot mention any of those who even if

any thing braver than the rest, because the list

would be too long. They shall all be mentioned

in regimental orders, as they have been in by myself

honorably complymented, in the presence of their

officers and fellow soldiers on the field of action.

On the night of the 28th my position was again

assaulted, but the assault was repulsed with

considerable loss on the part of the assailants.

I could not dislodge the enemy's sharpshooters from

behind the logs, stumps, ravines etc., in front and

around my position, for they were well sheltered.

In addition, they threw up some deep rifle pits all around

my works, distant about two hundred and fifty

yards, and from all of these, aided by artilery, He

kept up a terrible and steady fire upon every

part of my position, until the morning of the

14th June. During this time, I worked almost in-

cessantly, principaly at night - owing to the fire through

the day which prevented me from work - and by the

14th June, my works were far advanced toward com-

pletion at every point. Some nights I caused my

men to work all night, and by nine o'clock A.M.
