properly dealt with, as soon as an opportunity occurs. The men also acted most gallantly, some few, and but a few appearing the least "shaky". I cannot mention any of those who even if any thing braver than the rest, because the list would be too long. They shall all be mentioned in regimental orders, as they have been in by myself honorably complymented, in the presence of their officers and fellow soldiers on the field of action. On the night of the 28th my position was again assaulted, but the assault was repulsed with considerable loss on the part of the assailants. I could not dislodge the enemy's sharpshooters from behind the logs, stumps, ravines etc., in front and around my position, for they were well sheltered. In addition, they threw up some deep rifle pits all around my works, distant about two hundred and fifty yards, and from all of these, aided by artilery, He kept up a terrible and steady fire upon every part of my position, until the morning of the 14th June. During this time, I worked almost in- cessantly, principaly at night - owing to the fire through the day which prevented me from work - and by the 14th June, my works were far advanced toward com- pletion at every point. Some nights I caused my men to work all night, and by nine o'clock A.M.
