This picture shows Captain Edmund C. Bainbridge's Battery A, 1st U.S. Artillery, which occupied the position of Battery #8 on the Port Hudson Battlefield Map, northeast of Fort Desperate, about 400 yards from the fort's front.  This battery of ten guns fired on the fort throughout the siege, and was responsible for the shell which destroyed one of the two guns available to Colonel Johnson on May 27th.  (Image from National Archives)
