This is a view of Fort Desperate's left flank, a seen by Union troops.  The Confederate earthworks can be seen in the distance at the base of the trees.  The gully in the foreground was used as a camp by Union troops.  The light area in the middle right is the roof of a crude shelter.  (From National Park Service history lesson plan on Port Hudson)
