This map shows the location of the Union regiments and batteries arrayed against Fort Desperate during the May 27 assault.  (In his report, Johnson gives a different set of units as having participated in the charge on the Fort.)  The red lines represent the parapet, or earthen wall, and the black line running beside it represents the exterior trench.  Also shown are the positions of Johnson's two 12-pounder guns, one of which was disabled on May 27th by fire from Battery A, 1st U.S. Artillery (show located opposite the Fort's front).  (from a display at the Port Hudson State Historic Site)
