annoyed with them any more. I cannot close this report without saying something of the conduct of the officers and men under my command most particularly of the 15th Ark. Rgt. which was immediately under my command and occupied the Post of danger. I had at one time detachments from the 1st Miss., 49 Ala. & 18 Ark., all of whom occupied the rear of my camp under the hill and acted as a reserve, but were never in action, and but little exposed comparatively speaking. But the 15 Ark. was at all times in the front. So small a body of men could not have fought better, endured more hardships with more cheer- fulness and fortitude, and been more obedient to orders than they were. When made known of them that I refused to allow to allow them to be relieved after terrible days of labor, fighting and death. They said that they would cheerfully remain as long as I ordered them, and that Gen. Gardner should not be disappointed in them. And to those officers and men I now return my thanks, and I must say that they have agreeably [not] disappointed me in point of military discipline and endurance. My loss is as follows: Killed commissioned officers (2) two. Killed non-commissioned officers & privates (33) thirty three
