annoyed with them any more.

I cannot close this report without saying something

of the conduct of the officers and men under my

command most particularly of the 15th Ark. Rgt. which

was immediately under my command and

occupied the Post of danger. I had at one time

detachments from the 1st Miss., 49 Ala. & 18 Ark.,

all of whom occupied the rear of my camp under

the hill and acted as a reserve, but were never

in action, and but little exposed comparatively speaking.

But the 15 Ark. was at all times in the front.

So small a body of men could not have fought

better, endured more hardships with more cheer-

fulness and fortitude, and been more obedient to

orders than they were. When made known of them

that I refused to allow to allow them to be relieved after

terrible days of labor, fighting and death. They said

that they would cheerfully remain as long as I

ordered them, and that Gen. Gardner should not be

disappointed in them. And to those officers

and men I now return my thanks, and I must

say that they have agreeably [not] disappointed me in

point of military discipline and endurance.

My loss is as follows:

Killed commissioned officers (2) two.

Killed non-commissioned officers & privates (33) thirty three
