I must return my thanks to Lieuts. Dabney and

Ferret of the corps of engineers for their able

services in assisting me in planting "torpedoes"

also to Capt Girard who likewise assisted them.

To the two former gentlemen I feel much

indebtedness for their able services in assisting

me in planning and building my works,

erected after the seige commenced. And for their

kindness in giving advice upon all matters

within their knowledge, that related

to the defense of the position.

         I am My Dear Sir

              Your Obedient Servant

                 Ben Johnson

                    Col. 15 Ark. Rgt.

                 Comd. "Fort Desperate"
