The enemy was in considerable force yet Captain

F. in a short [time] executed the order, and my work

again progressed. On the morning of the 25th,

the enemy being reinforced, advanced and I sent

Co. "A"- Captain Stephenson - Co. F. - Captain Willson -

and Co. I - Captain Mathews all under command

of Lieut. Col. P. L. Lee to the assistance of Capt.

Franklin with orders to Lieut Col. Lee to check

the enemy & if possible to dislodge him from

his position - a very strong one - which was the

crest of an abrupt ridge in the edge of the woods.

Lieut Col. Lee - very inferior in numbers, with

great gallantry, after heavy skirmishing drove him

from his position with a loss of two privates

killed, and the 1st Sergeant [all of Co] mortally wounded

all Co. "A". The enemy - 13 Conn regt - lost

eleven killed and wounded, as I have since learned

from Col now Brig. Gen. Birge who commanded it.

In the evening of that day, hearing heavy firing

from small arms. and occassionaly from artillery

to the left of my front, about the position occupied

of Col. Steedman in the woods, I without orders from

any one, instantly "double quicken[ed]" my remaining

six companies. [This assistance?] I did not arrive

until the fight was over, but Col. Steedman expecting

the enemy to make another advance, ordered me
